I write, edit, and produce news stories, broadcasts and podcasts. I’m a concise and competent communicator who distills national and international events -- from politics to natural disasters, boring monotonous medical studies -- into stories that viewers and listeners can understand intellectually, relate to emotionally, and share with other people. Also, I’m a bit of a nerd.

I tell compelling stories.

Hey there! I'm Duane. I'm a writer, producer, and photographer living in Queens, New York. Curiosity drives me and I love exploring.

The job of a news writer is dynamic. On the one hand we have to communicate relevant, factual information that impacts our viewers/listeners. Second we have to help people understand what is at stake so they can act on the information. Then we have to make them care.

I'm a content producer for "Today in New York" on WNBC-TV. I write succinct scripts and edit video to craft compelling stories (which anchors read on air) that make people lean in.  I also write headlines for the news crawl and I write the newscast seen in NYC taxis. I also conceive, research, and write the trivia segment on Saturday morning.

I've written for CBS This Morning Saturday, the CBS Weekend Evening News, and CBS News Radio network.

I've produced national broadcasts, published an essay in the New York Times Magazine, interviewed members of Congress and cabinet secretaries, and I judge the News and Documentary Emmy Awards.

I enjoy volunteering with City Harvest and with my congregation at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Queens.

Broadcast News Writing & Producing

I've written for Weekend CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning Saturday.

I've produced live, hourly newscasts for CBS Radio News network heard by millions of people across the country.

Here are some examples of my TV writing:

01. Presidential Transition

[[ANCHOR ON CAMERA]]

NOW TO THE PRESIDENTIAL TRANSITION...

REPUBLICANS *AND* DEMOCRATS ARE CALLING FOR A CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION INTO WHETHER RUSSIAN HACKING INFLUENCED THE U-S PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION...

[[TAKE VOICE OVER]]

THIS COMES AS PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP HAS REPORTEDLY DECIDED TO NOMINATE THE C-E-O OF EXXON MOBILE AS SECRETARY OF STATE.

AT LEAST ONE PROMINENT REPUBLICAN SAYS HE HAS SERIOUS CONCERNS ABOUT REX TILLERSON'S CLOSE TIES TO THE KREMLIN.

THOSE CONCERNS NOW AMPLIFIED BY A WASHINGTON POST REPORT THAT THE C-I-A HAS CONCLUDED THAT RUSSIAN HACKERS ACTED TO HELP DONALD TRUMP WIN THE PRESIDENCY.

[[WIPE TO SOT]]

[[RUNS - 12]]

[[OUTCUE: "NEEDS TO BE EXAMINED."]]

[[CONTINUED VO]]

REX TILLERSON HAS WORKED CLOSELY WITH RUSSIA TO GAIN ACCESS TO OIL FIELDS.

IN 2013 VLADIMIR PUTIN AWARDED HIM "THE ORDER OF FRIENDSHIP."

02. Jackson Pollock

[[ANCHOR ON CAMERA]]

JACKSON POLLOCK IS RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S MOST IMPORTANT ARTISTS.

BUT IT TURNS OUT THAT BEFORE POLLOCK WAS *MAKING* ART, HE WAS *RESTORING* IT -- FOR THE CITY PARKS DEPARTMENT!

[[TAKE VOICE OVER]]

THE DEPARTMENT JUST FOUND OUT THAT POLLOCK WORKED FOR THEM BACK IN 1935.

THEY RECENTLY DISCOVERED HIS I-D CARD.

POLLOCK DEFINED THE ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST MOVEMENT, BUT HE DIDN'T WORK WITH PAINT WHILE HE WAS WITH THE PARKS DEPARTMENT.

HE WAS A STONE CUTTER WITH THE MONUMENT STAFF.

AND HE MAY HAVE WORKED ON THE FIREMAN'S MEMORIAL IN RIVERSIDE PARK.

03. Farewell Summer

[[VOICED BY HARLEY CARNES]]

IT’S THE END OF SUMMER, AND ON CONEY ISLAND THAT MEANS THE RITUAL LAST RIDE ON THE CYCLONE.

[[SFX OF ROLLER COASTER UP AND UNDER]]

ONE MORE TIME OVER THE HORIZON, ON THIS ICONIC ROLLER COASTER, AND THEN DOWN ITS STEEP, RICKETY, WOODEN TRACK, BOUNCING FROM SIDE TO SIDE, IN THOSE CAVERNOUS SEATS.

[[SFX OF OCEAN FADES UP AND UNDER]]

AND AFTER THAT, MAYBE A STROLL ALONG THE BOARDWALK, LICKING SOFT SERVE PISTACHIO ICE CREAM FROM DENNY’S DELIGHT, AND LISTENING TO THE OCEAN LAP AT THE SHORE.

[[SFX OF NATHAN’S FAMOUS FADES UP AND UNDER]]

AND BEFORE IT’S TIME TO GO -- A PAUSE -- FOR A NATHAN’S CHILI-DOG AND A SIDE OF BEER-BATTERED ONION RINGS.

THEN THE SLOW DRIVE DOWN SURF AVENUE...

[[SFX OF MUSIC AND DANCING FADES UP AND UNDER]]

… AWAY FROM THE AMUSEMENT PARK AND ONE FINAL GLANCE AT DINO’S WONDER WHEEL.

A NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK.

A SOARING MOSAIC OF LIGHTS CIRCLING AGAINST THE SUNSET.

FAREWELL SUMMER, AT LEAST FOR NOW.

HARLEY CARNES, CBS NEWS.
